Patong · west coast
Phuket's busiest beach: a long bay of soft sand with water sports, loungers and lifeguards, a few blocks from Bangla Road and the island's biggest nightlife.
Also written Hat Patong, Patong Bay, Patong Beach Phuket, Ao Patong · หาดป่าตอง · Пляж Патонг
Patong is the most famous beach in Phuket, a long bay of soft sand on the west coast with warm, clear water in the high season and rows of umbrellas and loungers for rent. Behind it lies a town with hotels in every price range, restaurants, malls, night markets and massage shops on every corner, and a few blocks inland, Bangla Road and the island's loudest nightlife.
The beach has three distinct parts. The centre, facing the restaurants and bars, is the busiest, with chairs, massages, parasailing and jet skis. The north end, below the Novotel and Four Points, is the prettiest, with softer sand, clearer water and coconut trees. The south end is quieter but busy with longtail boats, and a small river makes the water less clear.
Swimming is good from November to April. From May to October the southwest monsoon makes the sea rough and swimming is often closed, and lifeguards patrol the beach during the day. Patong is loud, busy and not for everyone, but for a first trip it puts the beach, shopping, day trips and nightlife within walking distance.
Below the Novotel, Four Points and Graceland: softer sand, clearer and bluer water, coconut trees, fewer people, more parking and plenty of fruit and street-food vendors.
Families, couples and anyone who wants the beach at its best.
Facing the restaurants and bars around Bangla Road: the busiest part, with rows of loungers, massages on the sand, parasailing, jet skis and beach clubs.
First-timers, friends and anyone who wants the action.
Quieter, with longtail boats and a floating pontoon for boats to Freedom Beach; a small river makes the water less clear.
A starting point for boat trips rather than a swim.
Swimming · dry season
From November to April the water is warm and clear, best near the Novotel and Four Points; swim in the lifeguards' zones.
Water sports · dry season
Parasailing, banana boats and jet skis run from the central beach; a 30-minute jet ski typically costs 1,500 to 2,000 THB. Take photos of the craft before you ride.
On the sand
Rent a lounger and umbrella in the centre, or walk north for open sand without chairs.
Nightlife
A walking street from 18:00 with beer bars, live music, go-go bars and big clubs, busiest from 22:00 to 01:00.
Nightlife
Barra Cuda's pool parties and Kudo's beachfront pool in the centre, and Fuga's calmer restaurant-club at the north end.

4.3out of 5
First-timers who want beach days, shopping and nightlife in one place.
A long bay of soft sand with clear water in the high season, lifeguards, and every facility a busy resort beach needs, from loungers to water sports. It stays in the 'good with clear limits' band because the centre is crowded with touts and jet skis, the south end has a river mouth with murkier water, and visitors report litter.
A profile, not a mark: where Patong Beach sits on four scales, and what it is known for.
Lifeguards on duty · Soft sand softest at the north end
Bangla Road becomes a walking street every evening from 18:00, with bars, live music and big international clubs until the early hours.
Parasailing, jet skis, banana boats and paddleboards run from the central beach in the high season.
Near the Novotel and Four Points the sand is softer, the water clearer and bluer, and coconut trees line the shore.
From Banzaan's seafood night market and Malin Plaza's stalls to seafood you pick off the ice on Beach Road.
Boat tours, island trips and a longtail to Freedom Beach all start here, and tours pick up from your hotel.
Lifeguards patrol from about 08:00 to 18:00 from towers along the beach; swim while they are on duty.
Red means no swimming, yellow means take care, green means calm. Swim in the zones the lifeguards mark.
From May to October the monsoon makes the sea rough and swimming is often closed; the dry season is the time to swim.
Jet skis, parasail boats and longtails work off the central and southern beach. Swim in the marked swimming zones.
A small river flows into the sea at the south end, where the water is often less clear. Swim further north.
