Lifeguards in the middle
Lifeguards are reported near the Laguna section in high season; swim near them or near other people.
Choeng Thale · west coast
A long, gently curving bay on Phuket's north-west coast: soft sand, free shade under casuarinas and a calm, shallow sea from November to April.
Also written Bangtao Beach, Bang Thao Beach, Ao Bang Tao · บางเทา · Банг Тао
Bang Tao is one of Phuket's longest beaches, an arc of light sand between Surin and Layan in Cherngtalay. From November to April the sea is calm and shallow with a gentle sandy entry, and casuarina trees give free shade along most of the shore.
The middle of the bay belongs to Laguna Phuket, with its lagoons, golf course and large resorts, and to the island's best-known beach clubs, where sunset is the main event. Walk north and the crowds thin out: that end is wide, clear and often almost empty.
From May to October the open bay takes the full monsoon swell. It is the season for surfers, runners and long walks rather than swimming, and the beach looks wild and quiet. Shops, restaurants and schools are a short drive inland all year.
The day visitors' third: most public access roads come down here and the Surin headland closes the view. It changed in 2026, when the small bars on the sand were cleared.
A day trip by scooter, a budget week, or anyone who wants Surin too.
Laguna Phuket's stretch: the resorts, the golf course and most of the beach clubs, where a sunbed comes with a food-and-drink credit and sunset is the main event.
Families who want a pool beside the sea, long stays, and anyone who likes a club day.
Quiet, wide and often almost empty, with the clearest water of the bay in peak season and one bamboo bar just before the headland.
Couples, dry-season swimmers, walkers and runners all year.
Swimming · dry season
From November to April the bay is calm with a sandy bottom and no coral. Swim to either side of the lagoon outlet.
Water sports · dry season
Gear huts near the middle of the beach rent kayaks, paddle boards, bodyboards and snorkel sets by the hour.
Boat trips · dry season
Longtail boats run to the nearby islets and Banana Beach; one guest paid 3,200 THB for three and a half hours.
Surfing · monsoon months
The monsoon swell reaches the bay from May to October; the smaller days at either end of the season suit beginners.
On the sand
Firm sand at low tide and a long, open shore: the north end at sunrise is the classic run.
Food and drink
Nine clubs from quiet pool days to DJ sunsets; most sell a day pass that becomes food-and-drink credit.
Wellness
Thai massage on the sand costs about 200 to 250 THB (2026).
Family
Blue Tree Phuket, a short drive inland, has pools, slides and a lagoon.
Shopping
Street food, stalls and music every Friday from 16:00 to 21:00, five minutes from the sand.
Food and drink
Kalido and The Beach Cuisine at the southern end, the Boat Club's food court by the boat lane, Smigo's bamboo bar in the north: a beach lunch at every price short of a club's minimum.
Nightlife
Catch, Carpe Diem and RAVA turn the music up as the sun goes down; the rest of the bay stays quiet, and the small bars of the road behind the southern beach carry on until late.
The light comes over the hills behind you, so the morning is soft and the sand still cool. The tide is often out: firm sand and long walks, and the north end to yourself.
In the dry season the water is clearest now. Walk out along the gentle slope and look back at the casuarinas; children can stand a long way out.
Tree shade shrinks as the sun climbs. A sunbed is about 100 to 150 THB at the ordinary operators, or a club's day pass turns into lunch. XANA Beach Club
The hottest hours are for Boat Avenue's shops and cafes, a massage under the trees for about 200 to 250 THB, or a round of golf. Boat Avenue
The bay faces west, so the whole beach turns to the sea. The clubs run DJ sets and fire shows; the north end has nobody. Catch Beach Club
Dinner at a club, at a bamboo bar with beanbags, or at Boat Avenue, where Friday is market night. There are no discos; the night ends when the music does. Smigo's Bar & Restaurant
4.6out of 5
Long stays and families in the dry season: a walkable beach, schools and shops nearby.
A long, safe-feeling dry-season beach with soft sand, free shade and room to spare, plus the island's best beach clubs and everything a long stay needs five minutes inland. It loses a little for the monsoon months, when swimming needs real caution.
A profile, not a mark: where Bang Tao Beach sits on four scales, and what it is known for.
Lifeguards in places · Soft light-golden sand
One of the island's longest beaches. Even in high season the northern end is often nearly empty.
At low tide the entry stays gentle and the wet sand is firm, the best surface on the island for a long walk or a morning run.
In the dry season the water is calm and clear, clearest at the northern end in peak season.
Seven beach clubs, resort restaurants along the sand and Boat Avenue's shops and cafes five minutes inland.
From November to April children can stand far from the shore on a sandy bottom, with tree shade behind them.
Lifeguards are reported near the Laguna section in high season; swim near them or near other people.
The flags show when the sea is right for swimming; check them, especially from May to October.
The south-west monsoon brings big swell and murky water, strongest from June to September; that is the season for surfing and long walks.
The Laguna lagoon drains into the sea mid-beach; after heavy rain the water there is less clear, so swim to the north or the south of it.
12 places open on the sand in September 2026, walked south to north, then the road behind the beach and a few minutes inland. A price level is what one visit typically costs a person.

In the dry season Bang Tao is one of the easiest beaches on the island with children: shallow, sandy, shaded and never far from a toilet or a pool.
There is no single entrance: several access roads branch off the coast road to different parts of the beach, and the middle is reached through Laguna.
Parking. Free, mostly informal parking by the access roads; resorts and clubs have their own. Boat Avenue's free car park fills on Friday evenings.
Vendors may only set up in marked zones, about a tenth of the beach; the rest is free to sit on.
Casuarina shade is generous in the morning and shrinks by late morning.
About 100 to 150 THB a day in high season at ordinary operators, front row more, sometimes free with drinks.
The firm wet sand at low tide is the best surface on the island for a long walk or a run.
Thailand's beach smoking ban carries fines up to 100,000 THB; reports differ on where it applies, so do not test it.
Dogs are generally tolerated; in peak season ask the nearest venue before letting one off the lead.
Boat Avenue's free car park fills on Friday evenings when the market runs, 16:00 to 21:00. Come early or walk in.
It is 100 THB from the airport, but only about three a day stop near Laguna. Grab is usually the honest answer.
A few sellers with drinks, fruit and corn; nobody pushes.
A massage under the trees is about 200 to 250 THB.
Yes, from November to April: the sea is usually calm, with a gentle sandy entry and no coral. From May to October the bay gets big swell, so swim only when the sea is calm and the flags allow. The northern part is usually the clearest; after heavy rain, swim away from the lagoon outlet in the middle.
Yes, in the dry season: the water is shallow near the shore, the bottom is sandy and the trees give shade. A rope swing hangs under the trees, and several clubs and resorts have children's pools. From May to October the sea is often too rough for children, and the pools are the better choice.
Only in part. Lifeguards are reported in the central section near Laguna in high season; at the northern and southern ends, swim near other people.
Yes, if you want a long, calm beach with room to spread out rather than a scene. Six kilometres of soft sand, free shade under the casuarinas, calm water from November to April and the island's best beach clubs; it is not the place for nightlife or snorkelling.
Only from May to October, when the south-west monsoon brings real swell and swimming is often closed. From November to April the sea is usually flat enough for small children; surfers get beginner waves in the shoulder months, May and October.
About 100 to 150 THB a day at ordinary operators in high season (2026). Beach clubs charge more or ask for a minimum spend that becomes food-and-drink credit; The Lazy Coconut, for instance, takes 1,000 THB a bed. You can also bring a towel and sit anywhere outside the marked zones.
XANA, Catch, Carpe Diem, RAVA, NORA, Casuarina, The Beach at Arinara, GOAT and The Lazy Coconut, as of September 2026. The small bars and clubs on the southern sand between SAii Laguna and Arinara were cleared by the authorities in April 2026 and have not reopened.
Some, but it is beach-club nightlife rather than bars and discos: DJ sunsets at Catch, Carpe Diem and RAVA, dinner on the sand, and the bars and restaurants of Boat Avenue five minutes inland. The small bars on the southern sand closed in 2026; a few on the road behind it stay open until two.
At the access roads, where parking is free and mostly informal. The southern third is easiest for day visitors, and Boat Avenue, about five minutes away, has a free car park that fills on Friday evenings.
About 25 to 30 minutes by car or Grab, some 20 to 25 km. The Phuket Smart Bus also stops near Laguna for a flat 100 THB, but only about three services a day call there.
For surfing, running and long walks, yes; for swimming, only on calm days. From May to October the bay is quiet and wild, with big waves, murky water some weeks and swimming often closed. The clubs and restaurants stay open, and prices drop.
Only a little: there are rocks at the southern end and a small islet off the northern end, but no real reef. For proper snorkelling take a longtail to the islets nearby or drive to the east coast's boats.
