Choeng Thale · west coast
The quiet north end of Bang Tao Bay, past a rocky headland: soft sand under casuarinas, a river mouth and a wooded island, with luxury resorts behind the trees.
Also written Layan Bay, Hat Layan, Layan Beach Phuket · หาดลายัน · Лаян
Layan is the northern end of Bang Tao Bay, cut off from the main beach by a rocky headland. It is a long curve of soft sand with casuarinas along the back, and at its northern end a small river runs out to sea beside a wooded island, with fishing boats moored in the river.
Until recently a handful of small restaurants stood under the trees; all have been removed except one at the far end, near the island, which also offers massage in a bamboo house. The long-running Dream Beach Club has closed. Behind the sand are luxury resorts, including the Anantara Layan, whose Beach House has a pool bar on the beach and a rooftop bar above it.
Locals and expats come here for a slow lunch, a massage and the sunset rather than for activities. From November to April the sea is usually calm; from May to October the waves grow, and the beach is emptier still.

On the sand
Bring a towel and a book: the casuarinas give free shade along the whole bay, and it rarely feels crowded.

At the northern tip a shallow lagoon meets the sea beside a wooded island; at low tide you can wade across.
Wellness

Nightlife
The Pavilions' rooftop bar sits above the treetops inland, for a drink or dinner with a view; prices are high.
Water sports · dry season
In the high season kayaks and paddleboards can be rented for a paddle around the island and the lagoon.
Boat trips · dry season
Longtail boats moored in the river mouth can take you along the coast to nearby coves.

4.3out of 5
A quiet, shaded beach day, a massage under the trees and a sunset drink at a resort rooftop.
A long, quiet curve of soft sand under casuarinas, with a wooded island and a river mouth at its northern end and wide sunsets over the Andaman. It sits in the lower band because the facilities on the sand have shrunk to one small restaurant, and one local guide rates the water better for paddling than for swimming.
A profile, not a mark: where Layan Beach sits on four scales, and what it is known for.
No lifeguards · Soft golden sand under casuarinas
Past the headland, the bay keeps the soft sand of Bang Tao but few of its people; even in high season it stays calm.
At the northern tip a river meets the sea beside a wooded island, with fishing boats moored inside the river mouth.
The bay faces west, and the rooftop bar of the Anantara's Beach House is one of the island's sunset spots, with live music around 18:00.
Casuarinas line the back of the sand, so there is shade all day without renting anything.
The last small restaurant on the sand offers Thai massage in a bamboo house, with lunch before or after.
In the monsoon the waves get bigger; swim when the sea is calm and the flags allow.
At the northern end a river flows into the sea beside the island and boats use the channel; the best swimming is further south.
Longtails and fishing boats come and go from the river at the north end. Keep clear of their route.
There is no lifeguard post; keep children within reach.
The island can be reached on foot across the shallows at low tide. Check the tide times so you are not cut off on the way back.

The season · November to April
November to April: the sea is usually calm and clear, the skies dry, and the bay at its best for a paddle, a walk and sunsets. Even at the height of the season it stays quiet.
The monsoon · May to October
May to October: bigger waves on some days, so check the flags. The beach is emptier, the scenery greener, and the rooftop sunsets between the showers are still worth it.
