Pansea is a small cove on Phuket's west coast, just north of Surin Beach and separated from it by a rocky outcrop, with Bang Tao around the next headland. It has deep, soft white sand, trees along the back, rocks at both ends and clear water in the dry season. Google Maps lists it as Pansea Surin.
Like every beach in Thailand, Pansea is public by law, but the land around it belongs to two luxury resorts. The Surin covers the southern part of the sand with thatched umbrellas and beach villas; Amanpuri, open since 1988 and long a favourite of celebrities, holds the northern part. Sunbeds, toilets and showers are for their guests.
Without a room, the realistic ways in are a steep path over the headland from Surin Beach or a longtail boat from a nearby beach. The Surin's beach restaurant welcomes outside diners in the high season, which makes a sunset dinner the easiest way to see the cove.
Swimming · dry season
From November to April the water is calm and clear, and you share the sand with only a few resort guests.
Snorkelling and diving · dry season
Rock formations close both ends of the cove, with coral a short swim from the sand on flat days.
Food and drink · dry season
The resort's beach restaurant serves the catch of the day and imported meats from the grill, and welcomes outside diners in the high season.
Food and drink
Amanpuri's restaurants include Arva, serving Italian food in one of Phuket's most famous resorts; call ahead about a table.
Water sports · dry season
The two resorts offer kayaks, windsurfing, water-skiing and wakeboarding for their guests.
Surfing · monsoon months
On days with waves of about a metre or more, the cove can have good surf; for experienced surfers only.
Nature · dry season
A steep path over the rocky outcrop from Surin Beach is the way in on foot for non-guests.
From the north end of Surin Beach, take the steep path over the headland to reach the cove while it is still cool.
In the dry season swim in the clear water and snorkel along the rocks at either end.

A small, beautiful cove with deep, soft white sand, clear dry-season water, trees along the back and rocks at both ends. For most visitors it is hard to reach: the land around it belongs to two luxury resorts, so without a room there you need a steep path or a boat, and there are no public facilities.
A profile, not a mark: where Pansea Beach sits on four scales, and what it is known for.
No lifeguards · Deep soft white sand
With the land held by two resorts, the sand is shared by a few guests; even in high season it rarely feels busy.
The Surin's beach restaurant is open to outside diners in the high season and is one of the best places on this coast to watch the sun go down.

The path over the headland from Surin is steep and rough. Wear proper shoes and avoid it after rain or in the dark.
Longtail boats sometimes drop people in the cove; look out for them when swimming near the shore.

For families staying at The Surin or Amanpuri, Pansea is a calm, quiet cove in the dry season. For everyone else it is a poor choice with children: the way in is a steep path or a boat, and there are no public toilets, food or lifeguards.
Pansea lies just north of Surin Beach. Guests arrive through The Surin or Amanpuri; others walk over the steep headland from the north end of Surin Beach or come by longtail boat from a nearby beach.
Parking. No public parking at the cove. Park at the car park behind Surin Beach and walk over the headland.
The easiest way for a non-guest to enjoy Pansea is a lunch or sunset dinner at The Surin's beach restaurant in the high season.
For a normal beach day with parking and lifeguards, use Surin Beach just south; Pansea is a look-around, not a base.
The path over the headland is steep and hard to find; sandals are a bad idea.
The beach is public, but the resorts control the land around it. Stay on the sand, keep to yourself and do not use their loungers.
The rocks at both ends are the best part of the water on flat days; there is nowhere to rent gear unless you are a resort guest.
The Surin's beach restaurant opens from about late October to April, weather permitting.
Yes, by law every beach in Thailand is public. But the land around Pansea belongs to The Surin and Amanpuri resorts, so there is no public road or path to it, and in practice it is used mostly by their guests.
Stay at The Surin or Amanpuri, or book a meal at The Surin's beach restaurant. Otherwise, walk over the steep headland from the north end of Surin Beach, or take a longtail boat from Surin or Bang Tao.
