The dry season
November to April: dry, hot afternoons, forest trails firm underfoot and the waterfalls low. In mid-March Thalang celebrates its heroines with three nights of festival on the Victory Field.
District
The inland subdistrict around Thalang town: historic temples, the Khao Phra Thaeo forest, international schools and quiet villa estates near the airport.
Thep Krasatti is an inland subdistrict of Thalang in the north of Phuket, about 19 km from Phuket Town and 1 km from the Thalang district office. It borders the sea and Mai Khao to the north, Si Sunthon to the south, the Khao Phra Thaeo hills and Pa Khlok to the east, and Choeng Thale and Sakhu to the west. The council's own area alone is about 78 square kilometres.
Thalang was once the island's main town. In 1785 a Burmese army besieged it, and two sisters, Lady Chan and Lady Mook, organised its defence until the Burmese withdrew in March 1786. Lady Chan's royal title, Thao Thep Kasattri, is the subdistrict's name. Old temples recall that time: Wat Phra Nang Sang saw fighting in the war, and Wat Thep Kasattri at Ban Don is said to be the island's oldest.
To the east the land rises into the Khao Phra Thaeo forest, a protected area of about 23 square kilometres climbing to 442 metres, with Ton Sai waterfall at its western edge. The famous half-buried golden Buddha of Wat Phra Thong is here too.
Today Thep Krasattri Road, the main road of the island's north, runs through it, with the Robinson Lifestyle Thalang mall and the district hospital. Two international schools, UWC Thailand and Glenalmond, have brought families, teachers and quiet gated estates of pool villas.
Khao Phra Thaeo protects about 23 km² of forest up to 442 m, with easy paths to Ton Sai waterfall and longer trails over the hills; it opens from 08:00 to 17:00.
The airport is about 10 to 20 minutes away by car along Thep Krasattri Road.
UWC Thailand and Glenalmond Phuket are both in the subdistrict, so many homes nearby are let to teachers and school families.
Robinson Lifestyle Thalang on Thep Krasattri Road covers shopping, banks and food, and Thalang Hospital is the district's public hospital.
Large pool villas in gated estates, away from the tourist coast: more room and less noise than the beach areas.

Mostly large pool villas in gated estates, with townhouses and local houses along the roads around Thalang town. Many homes are let long term to teachers and school families.
November to April: dry, hot afternoons, forest trails firm underfoot and the waterfalls low. In mid-March Thalang celebrates its heroines with three nights of festival on the Victory Field.
May to October: heavy showers, a green forest and the waterfalls at their fullest; paths turn muddy, so good shoes help. Daily life inland goes on as usual.
A favourite with families who choose a school first: UWC Thailand and Glenalmond Phuket are here, the airport is close, and homes are larger and quieter than on the coast.
Thep Krasattri Road, the island's main north–south road, runs through the subdistrict between the airport and Phuket Town. It is busy but moves; a car or scooter is the usual way to get around.
Parking. Temples, the mall and the sanctuary entrance have their own car parks.
Wat Phra Nang Sang and the other temples ask for covered shoulders and knees; carry a light shawl.
Khao Phra Thaeo opens at 08:00; the first hour is the coolest and quietest.
The national-park fee at Ton Sai is 200 THB for a foreign adult; keep small notes.
From November to April the falls can shrink to a trickle; they run fullest in the rainy months.
From 13 to 15 March the Heroines' Festival draws crowds to Thalang in the evenings; expect traffic around the Victory Field.
Robinson Lifestyle Thalang saves the drive to Central Festival for most shopping, banking and dining.
