The dry season
November to April: dry and sunny, the resorts' high season; the sea is calm and the islands off the cape are clearest from the lookouts.
Cape · Wichit
The end of the peninsula south-east of Phuket Town, in Wichit: resort coves, the island's original aquarium, calm Ao Yon and a working port on the east shore.
Cape Panwa is the southern end of the hilly peninsula that runs south-east from Phuket Town, about 10 km from the town centre. Sakdidet Road follows its eastern side down to the tip, where the Phuket Aquarium stands. West of the tip lie Ao Yon's two small bays and, beyond Laem Khao Khad, Khao Khad Beach facing Chalong Bay. Our area takes in the tip, the wooded slopes above it, Ao Yon and that western coast.
The cape is the council's village Moo 8. Its name means 'a thousand wa', an old Thai measure of about two metres, and villagers tell three stories for it: boats from Phuket Bay had to swing a thousand wa out around the tip to clear its strong current; the sea off it was too deep to sound; or the headland could be seen from more than a thousand wa away.
It is the quietest corner of the south-east: no bar street, little within walking distance and almost nothing open after dark. Five-star resorts such as Sri Panwa, Cape Panwa Hotel and the Pullman hold the slopes and most of the coves, and several of the cape's small beaches are kept for their guests. Visitors come for the aquarium, the views, a resort day pass or a long lunch on the sand at Ao Yon.
The eastern shore is working coast. North of the resorts stand the Thailand Smelting and Refining works and Phuket Deep Sea Port, a stop for cruise liners, with jetties for day-trip boats beyond it. Ao Makham's bay and the Khao Khad hill, to the north, have pages of their own.
There is very little to walk to and almost nothing after dark; most visitors stay at one of the resorts on the slopes or come for the day by car or scooter.
Cape Panwa Viewpoint on Sakdidet Road looks across to Koh Lon and is at its best at sunset; Khao Khad View Tower, on the hill to the north-west, gives a free 360-degree view over Chalong Bay and the islands.
The Phuket Aquarium at the tip is small and inexpensive: 300 THB for adults and 150 THB for children, open daily 08:30 to 16:30 (2026), with a short tunnel and a turtle hatchery.
Panwa House serves Thai dinners in a Sino-Portuguese house on the Cape Panwa Hotel's beach; Ao Yon has beach cafés and The Cove's restaurant, and Akoya's rooftop bar sits above the bay.
Ton Ao Yon Waterfall is a small, little-known fall past Ao Yon, free and best in daylight; Tarzan Adventure's rope park sits on a forested hill above the bay.
Guides disagree on songthaews and none can be counted on; book the ride back before you go out, or rent a scooter.

Resorts, pool villas and a few condo buildings on the slopes, with village houses along Sakdidet Road. In October 2026 rents ran from about 10,000 THB a month for a one-bedroom condo and 35,000 to 75,000 THB for a house to 120,000 THB and more for a pool villa.
5 homes for rent in Cape PanwaNovember to April: dry and sunny, the resorts' high season; the sea is calm and the islands off the cape are clearest from the lookouts.
May to October: the cape is sheltered from the south-west monsoon, so Ao Yon usually stays swimmable while the west coast is rough; showers come and go, and resort prices drop.
One of the calmer corners for children: the aquarium, a beginners' rope park and Ao Yon's sheltered water, with a children's pool on the Pullman's day pass. There are no lifeguards, few public facilities and little within walking distance, so families need their own transport.
The cape is at the end of Sakdidet Road, about 10 km from Phuket Town (15 to 20 minutes) and 45 km from the airport (about 45 minutes); Patong is 40 to 50 minutes away. Guides disagree on public transport, so plan on a car, a scooter or a taxi.
Parking. Khao Khad View Tower has a car park and toilets at its foot; at Ao Yon, residents may not let cars down to the beach, so park on the main road and walk.
Taxis and ride apps reach the cape but do not wait around; arrange the return before you go out.
Come in the morning: the feeding show is late in the morning.
Dinner runs from 18:30 to 23:00 on the other six days.
Sri Panwa's 1,888 THB comes back as food and drink; book at least a day ahead (2026).
Khao Khad's beach has a rocky bottom and Ao Makham's bay is shallow and muddy; Ao Yon is the swimming beach.
Residents may not let cars down to the beach; park on the main road and walk.
The rooftop above Ao Yon fills every evening.
Sri Panwa's rooftop bar takes outside guests from 17:00 to 20:00 with a reservation and a minimum spend.
At the southern tip of the peninsula south-east of Phuket Town, in Wichit, about 10 km from the town centre and 45 km from the airport.
By taxi or ride app, or on a rented scooter. Guides disagree on songthaews: one says they run from Phuket Town about hourly, others that there is no useful service, so do not count on one.
300 THB for adults and 150 THB for children (2026); it is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30 at the tip of the cape.
Yes, at Ao Yon, whose sheltered bays usually stay calm even in the monsoon. Several other coves belong to resorts, and the bays on the east shore are shallow and muddy. There are no lifeguards.
Several sell day passes: Sri Panwa 1,888 THB, all returned as food and drink credit; the Pullman 1,500 THB for adults and 750 THB for children aged 6 to 12, free under six (2026). Panwa House and Baba Nest also take outside guests.
'A thousand wa', an old Thai measure of about two metres. Local stories say boats had to sail a thousand wa out around the tip, that the sea was too deep to measure, or that the cape could be seen from that far.
Hardly any: resort bars, Akoya's rooftop above Ao Yon and Baba Nest at Sri Panwa. For bars, go to Phuket Town, 15 to 20 minutes away.
