Choeng Thale is a subdistrict of Thalang on the north-west coast, between Kamala in the south and Sakhu in the north. In front lies Bang Tao Bay with five beaches: Surin, Pansea, Bang Tao, Banana and Layan. Behind it a ridge of hills runs parallel to the shore. The whole subdistrict covers about 42 square kilometres.

The middle of the bay belongs to Laguna Phuket, a resort area of more than 1,000 acres built on former tin-mining land: six hotels, private villas, lagoons and an 18-hole golf course, linked by free shuttle buses and boats for guests.

Inland, the town of Cherngtalay grew along Srisoonthorn Road around the municipal office, the fresh market, Wat Cherngtalay, founded in 1917, and the Chinese shrine of San Chao Sam Ong Hu, founded in 1901. Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket, two open-air malls at the Laguna entrance, are where residents shop, eat and meet.

In twenty years the area has changed from quiet villages into one of Phuket's main places to live for foreigners: pool villas, condos, international schools nearby and several restaurants recognised by the Michelin Guide. The price is traffic: at peak times the Laguna junction and Srisoonthorn Road slow to a crawl.

    Thai, southern Thai and European kitchens sit side by side along the roads behind the beach, from a Bib Gourmand southern Thai restaurant open only at weekends to fine dining around Boat Avenue.

    Boat Avenue has a large imported-food supermarket, cafés and a Friday market; Porto de Phuket next door adds a supermarket food hall, a pharmacy, sports and fashion shops. Parking at both is free.

  • Five beaches on one bay

    Bang Tao is about 6 km long; Surin, Pansea, Banana and Layan add smaller bays at either end, so there is always a quieter stretch within a short drive.

  • Close to the airport

    The airport is about 17 km away, 20 to 30 minutes by car off-peak, and the airport Smart Bus stops at Laguna and near Boat Avenue.

  • Built for families who stay

    International schools are on the doorstep or within 15 to 30 minutes, the resorts run kids' clubs, and Blue Tree's park is just east in Si Sunthon.

  • Surf and paddle

    When the south-west monsoon brings waves, surf schools on Bang Tao run group lessons for about 1,000 THB (2026); stand-up paddling works all year on calm days and on the lagoons.

    The town market on Srisoonthorn Road sells vegetables, seafood and cooked Thai dishes; its busy afternoons are Tuesday and Thursday, roughly 16:00 to 20:00.

November to April: calm seas on all five beaches, dry sunny days and the busiest weeks of the year. Hotels and villas fill, and traffic on Srisoonthorn Road and at the Laguna junction is at its worst around Christmas and Chinese New Year.

May to October: the south-west monsoon brings swell to the open bay, red flags on many days and short heavy showers. Surfers arrive, roads and restaurants are quieter, and a few small places close until the season returns.

  • Laguna's resorts run kids' clubs, and some restaurants have play areas.
  • Blue Tree, with a children's park, jogging trails and padel courts, is a short drive east in Si Sunthon.

Highway 4030 runs north to south through the subdistrict and Srisoonthorn Road (4025) links it inland to Thalang and the main island road. A car or scooter is the norm; some pockets are walkable once you are there.

  • Night owls: beyond the beach clubs and a few bars, nights are quiet; Patong is 25 to 40 minutes away.

    Near Boat Avenue the airport Smart Bus stops on request; stand at the roadside and wave.

  • Hospitals are in town

    There is no large hospital in the subdistrict; the big private hospitals are in Phuket Town, 30 to 40 minutes away. Save the route before you need it.

  • Weekend-only kitchens

    Some of the best local restaurants keep short hours: Kin-Kub-Ei, a Bib Gourmand southern Thai kitchen, opens Friday to Sunday only.

  • Vegetarian Festival

    In autumn the Sam Ong Hu shrine joins the island's Vegetarian Festival; expect processions, firecrackers and road closures nearby.

  • Low-season closures

    From May some small restaurants and bars close for weeks; check before you drive.
