เกี่ยวกับถลาง

Thalang town is the seat of Thalang district, in the north of Phuket, about 19 km from Phuket Town and 10 to 20 minutes from the airport. Its local government is the Thep Krasattri Subdistrict Municipality: about 4.1 km² covering villages Moo 1, 2, 3 and 7 of Thep Krasattri, with its office on Thep Krasattri Road some 100 m from the district office. It began as a sanitary district in 1955 and became a municipality in 1999.

Thalang was the island's main town long before Phuket Town. In 1785 a Burmese army besieged it, and two sisters, Lady Chan and Lady Mook, led its defence until the Burmese withdrew in 1786. Their family's house stood at Ban Khian, by Wat Phra Nang Sang; nothing of it survives, and a shrine to the two 'grandmothers' now marks the place. The town's market still carries the Ban Khian name.

The town's best-known sight is Wat Phra Thong, whose golden Buddha rises from the ground only to its chest: legend says it could not be dug out. Wat Phra Nang Sang, built, its name says, by a royal lady, saw fighting in the Burmese war and is a registered ancient monument. The municipality's emblem carries both, with the seated statues of the two heroines.

Today Thalang is a working district town on the island's main north–south road: Lotus's and Makro face each other on Thep Krasattri Road, Thalang Hospital serves the north, and a morning market feeds the surrounding villages. Around it, international schools and gated villa estates have brought many foreign families.
